What's Rotary All About?

Rotary International, the world's first service club organization, includes more than 1.2 million members worldwide who volunteer their time and talent to further the Rotary motto, Service Above Self.

Rotary was formed on February 23, 1905 by Paul P. Harris, a Chicago attorney, who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. (The name “Rotary” is derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices.)
Why do we do what we do?
The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. In particular:

  • Develop acquaintances as an opportunity for service;
  • Employ high ethical standards in business;
  • Recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations;
  • Apply the principle of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life; and
  • Advance international understanding, good will and peace through a world fellowship in the ideal of service.

    Rotary International recognizes the value of diversity. Rotary encourages clubs to assess those eligible for membership under existing membership guidelines, and to include the appropriate range of diverse individuals in their clubs.

    In summary . . .

    Each local Rotary Club is a group of friendly, dedicated people who work together to make the world a better and safer place. Rotarians are people who enjoy forming friendships and joining with their friends to do good things for their community and the world.
  • What sort of community service work does Sunrise Rotary do?
    Projects the club has tackled include: hammering and painting for Habitat for Humanity; planting trees for Baton Rouge Green; directing joggers at the annual Reindeer Run; sending outstanding Louisiana high school students to Rotary Youth Leadership Camp each year; and working with the LSU Arboretum at their annual plant fest.

    Two projects have been permanently adopted by Sunrise Rotary - Habitat for Humanity and assisting GoodFellows / Good Samaritans with their annual needy children project – Sunrise Rotarians raise funds and stuff sacks with clothes, toys and books to help provide Christmas for approximately 2500 needy children in Baton Rouge each year.

    In 2008 Sunrise Rotary helped raise more than $42,000 for The Arc Baton Rouge by serving as the spark plug and major sponsor for the First Annual Arc Baton Rouge Plane Pull held at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport. Other hands-on community support is provided by Sunrise Rotarians to leading community organizations such as the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, The International Hospitality Foundation at LSU, the Reading Friends Program of Volunteers in Public Schools, and Junior Achievement of Baton Rouge.

    Since 1992 Vocational Service Awards have been presented annually to outstanding public servants such as fire, police, and emergency response personnel.
    Sunrise Rotary takes an active part each year in a Group Study Exchange that involves business men and women from another country coming to visit clubs that are part of Rotary District 6200. The visitors stay in the homes of Sunrise Rotarians and are hosted in Baton Rouge for a week of their month-long tour Several weeks later a group from Louisiana follows our visitors home to stay as guests of Rotarians in the country with which we are conducting the exchange for that year. All expenses for travel and all food and public lodging for the GSE program are covered by Rotary International, District 6200, Sunrise Rotary and the other participating Rotary Clubs.

    Likewise the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship Program has resulted each year in several students sponsored by Sunrise Rotary spending a year studying abroad with all expenses paid by the Rotary Foundation and District 6200.
    In 1993-1994, Sunrise Rotary Club members chartered a Rotaract Club on the LSU Campus in Baton Rouge. Sunrise Rotary also participates in the Rotary Youth Exchange program, including short-term and long-term exchanges of students within the geographical area of our Club and students sponsored by a Club from another country.

    Sunrise Rotarians have taken leadership roles in the chartering of two new Rotary Clubs in District 6200.
