Uniforms for Kids - Beer, Bands and Barbecue
Chair: Michael Olinde - michael@olinde.com
Committee Members: Laura Davis, Jay Jolly, Michael Olinde, Bob Matthews, Ron Moreau, Harvey Honore, Todd Mulford, Molly Quirk and Hank Heroman.
Purpose: Every child dreams! Some want to be astronauts, ballerinas or movie stars. But the children we served through Uniforms for Kids Program dream of a future where they will have a decent home and food when they are hungry. Without an education, their dreams may never come true. Poverty can affect a child in so many devastating ways. All the children we serve with this program are excited about starting school, but fear the embarrassment of showing up without the proper uniform. With the help of the Sunrise Rotary, St. Vincent de Paul helps children avoid this humiliating experience that can permanently damage what little self-esteem they have left. Together, we extend a hand of compassion to over 13,000 vulnerable children in our community every year.
History: History of Sunrise Rotary’s involvement)In 2010, the leaders of Sunrise Rotary recognized the downturn in the economy, and the impact that it would have on needy children. In order to respond to this need, Sunrise Rotary came together to establish the Uniforms for Kids – Beer, Bands and Barbecue event.
This event has raised thousands of dollars for the purchase of new school uniforms for needy children. The effort has touched the lives of thousands of children. No child should dread going to school because they are afraid of being ridiculed for lacking the proper school uniform. A child's self-esteem is a very fragile thing, and one hurtful comment during the early formative years of a child's life can have a huge impact on their self-confidence. Together, we are changing their futures and giving them a chance to break the cycle of poverty.
Calendar of Events: (2011/2012 Rotary Year) This event is scheduled in June of 2012 – day to be announced at a later date. |

Sunrise Rotary House Project
Chair: Bob Mathews - bob@neighborsmag.com
Sunrise Rotary House Foundation/Trust Subcommittee Bill Shockey, Chairman Daryl Ellis Hank Heroman Dr. Lynn Tucker
Communications Subcommittee Chris Town, Chairman Bob Ramsey Dr. Heck Olinde Joe Nicholosi Laura Davis Bill Golden Strategic Planning Subcommittee Mike Olinde, Chairman Barry Rester Bill Freshwater Carol Kinchen
Fundraising Subcommittee Buddy Weber, Chairman Joe Donchess Dr. Lynn Tucker Cecil Phillips Laura McClain Cherine Patin
Hotel/Motel Subcommittee Stacy Jarrard, Chairman Bart Zimmerman Ursula Carmena Sheila Joyner
Purpose: Every day more and more people from throughout our state and region come to Baton Rouge for medical care. Expansion of our community’s medical complex has been rapid and constant over the past three decades. It has been projected, however, that this rate of growth will more than double over the next 20 years as thousands of people from over 50 miles away fill our community’s hospitals.
Patients from throughout Louisiana and several surrounding states and their support network of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and loyal friends are desperately in need of an affordable out-of-hospital place to stay. Caring for a loved one who must remain near a hospital but not in the hospital can be very expensive. Such out-of-hospital stays often stretch over several weeks or months and cost several hundreds of dollars per day. Typically medical insurance does not cover out-of-hospital expense for food and lodging and the essentials of daily life in a strange city.
Sunrise Rotary of Baton Rouge feels it is essential for our community to reach out to these hospital patients and their families as the Baton Rouge Mediplex grows. Our goal is to provide assistance in the form of discounted and/or subsidized hotel rooms or fully furnished apartments for patients and their support network that are forced by illness to live in Baton Rouge temporarily.
We want patients and their families to feel welcome by providing them with a homelike, supportive atmosphere whenever and wherever possible. We will support their need for living essentials, so that the patients and their families can focus on what is the most important to them - improving the health of their loved one. Patients and their families as well as our hospitals and our entire Baton Rouge community suffer when people leave our area un-necessarily for medical care when equal or better care is available right here in Baton Rouge.
The Sunrise Rotary House Committee is working with our hospitals, our hotels and motels, and several large-scale apartment developers to provide affordable alternatives and a hearty welcome to long-distance patients and their families. There have even been conversations about a very long-range plan for possible construction of a multi-story, highly specialized and medically equipped hotel for patients and their family members similar in purpose and design to the Rotary House at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center which is part of the Texas Medical Center in Houston.
